Gravity
First Lonely Moment
Said Too Much
Anywhere With You
You're Gonna Miss Me
Another Week
Seen the Future
Slowly I Turned
Repetitive Motion

Gravity

Had the flow/chord structure for this one going through my brain for several years. Found the inspiration for the lyric in a force of natural blonde who---no matter what she did to me---and some weren't particularly nice---I, without fail, found myself drawn to.
The chorus came to me when she was hurting about some stupid something or other, and---being the silly man that I am---I sent her a note that ended, "If there's anything you need, just let me know."
She never answered, and I figured, "You know, she was right..."
Romantic and cheesy, but then…so am I…

I got stars, I parked them in her sky.
I got fire, she sparked it in my eye.
I got ground so I laid it at her feet.
She's got pull, she's got gravity.

Hanging tight here as the world turns
Breathing fire as my city burns.
Her creature comfort done got up to leave.
But she pulls me back, she's got gravity.

And I asked her, "Is there anything you need?"
And she said nothing…
She was right.

Stronger now, from carrying this weight.
It's everything, and it's all left up to fate.
I did what I could do, I sung my piece.
She drags me down, she's got gravity.

First Lonely Moment

Pissed off at someone, lying awake with coffee running through my veins, but standing my ground, dammit... I thought this quiet acoustic song was a throwaway, or, at very least, not right for a full band.
Michael, Tommy and Brandon thought different…they're so smart…
Turned into something altogether different than what I had written, but for the better.

This coffee pot knows no bounds
I'm lying here alone standing my ground
Kept awake by dreams of how I used to sleep
Up to my neck in "I'm in this too deep…"

Try as I may, I give in to this fight
In my first lonely moment…
Tonight.

Repeat refrain of buzz and hiss.
The sound of wrong and dear near-miss
A light turned on, it creeps beneath the door.
Carpet rising to hold me to the floor.

Under the radar I give in to this fight
It's my first lonely moment,
Tonight.

Said Too Much

First week of September 2001. Broken-hearted by the previously mentioned damn blonde, drowning in bitters, I sat down with a guitar and this one was finished in about 15 minutes. At first I thought, "It's not great, but kinda rockin', a good set filler at very least", but once Michael came up with his twisted guitar line, it became one of my faves.

Your mountain made a molehill outta me.
If I conjugate some lines, then my words, they'll all agree
If I take some time and get some money saved
Put a mortgage on my lifetime, a downpayment on some dirt to fill my grave.

Just because I wrote this song don't mean that I care.
Just because I curse your name, it don't mean that I care.
Just because I love you, that don't mean that I care.
But I said too much again, gonna take that last line back...

I need this like a hole in the head.
We can calculate the mileage by the words I never said.
You can separate the diction from the state
Now you talk like a New Yorker, and you're everything I've ever come to hate.

Time, it will agree to disagree.
With your playing the percentage, and your matter of degrees.
If I take some time and get some money saved,
Now you're breaking down the barriers, all the world's become your cage.

Anywhere With You

Not nearly as sweet as it seems.
Yuh-huh, the chorus is romantic and sentimental, but the verses are less about love than about incredible frustration.
Sometimes it seems like you can have every option in the world, except the one you actually want.

I could go anywhere, do anything I wanna do
The future's wide open now.
Whisper words you wanna hear, sweet next-to-nothings in your ear.
That's you queue for telling me to go.

Of all the places I can go,
All the things that I can do,
The only place I really wanna be is…
Anywhere with you.

Shaking this uncommon ground that shapes the soundtrack and sells the sound
That colors anything you care to bleed.
Cover up your wicked grin, contagious is my favorite sin.
Run away to get back where you are.

Stupid as you know it is, this hopeful that you must relive,
To draw your inspiration where you did.
Or lay yourself down to die, sure that that would catch his eye,
Then again, you won't be around to know…

You're Gonna Miss Me

Nonsensical rhyming couplets.
The line "Lady luck stuck her tongue in my ear" was something that I had misheard in someone else's song a long time ago. (For the life of me, I can't remember which song, or the REAL words to the line I misheard) but once I realized that that WASN'T the line that I'd heard, I thought…
"That SHOULDA been the line in that song…"
So I wrote it down, and the rest of it grew from there. A story that proves that sometimes getting what you want isn't so great, after all…

The first thing she said as she crossed my lips
I didn't even know her name
She said, "You're gonna miss me,
You're gonna miss me…"

I knew she was right so I said "I do,"
As we walked down that aisle
"I got something to show you,
I got something to show you."

On the way to hell and back,
Lady luck stuck her tongue in my ear.
And she whispered something soft and sweet
And it's still ringing through my fears

I robbed her blind and she held a grudge
And she promised that she'd never leave
And now she's always beside me,
She's always beside me.

She gave me hell, and I gave in,
It wasn't much,
But it was what I had to offer,
And so I offered…

On the way to all I lack,
Lady luck put her leg in my path
And I fell for her to show my gratitude
Now I'm trying to make it back.

A borrowed quote from a brazen lie,
What it lacks in truth,
It makes up for insincerely,
I see it clearly.

She's everything to everyone,
She'd mean more to me,
If I just had the chance to miss her.
She said I'd miss her…

Another Week

The idea for this one is older than dirt. We actually tried this one back in the Art School days, but I could never finish it to the point that I was happy with it, so we never actually played it in front of people.
Tommy's drumming really makes it go...

A weekends worth of hangovers
Comes crashing down on Sunday afternoon
Realization of another week
As I'm staring at the ceiling of my room

I'm on my fiftieth state of mind this week
And I know today will only bring fifty one
So another seven days have passed me by
And dropped another fresh beginning at my feet.
But it's just another week.

Guess I should be happy,
Another Sunday and I'm still alive
But I really thought I'd be doing something more
Than barely getting by.

Another week of mission unaccomplished
Another seven days of feeling incomplete
So another seven days have passed me by
And dropped another fresh beginning at my feet

It ain't that bad
It ain't that bad.

It's just another week.
It's just another week.
It's just another week.
Yeah, this is gonna be my week
Yeah, this is gonna be my week.

Seen The Future

Same damn girl, yeah.

Unrealistic expectations,
Breed those looks of disappointment.
You let it slip that you could walk on water,
Now you're trying not to drown.

Morning comes and finds you on your knees,
Speaking French and saying pretty please.
Life of a party that I wouldn't attend
Don't let it bring you down.

I've seen the future, and it ain't me.
I know your answer, it's plain to see.

Inspiration, melting in the sun,
Lost your faith, now that you got one.
Family tree is shaking more than kin,
But something less than cool.

I have just begun to run away…

Slowly I Turned

Got the original idea from a 3 Stooges short where the title was repeated over and over.
Seemed to fit my life…every time I thought I was out, she kept pulling me back in!!! Each time I thought to myself, "I'm OK now, I'm over her"…then…BANG…she called my name…and slow-ly I turned…

I almost made it to the door
But something stopped and dragged me in.
I feel alright
I'm feeling less than alright
I know there's more than one way to spin.

She called my name.
And slowly I turned.
And I went back.
Some fools never learn.

This curse of beauty that I swear…
It is the blessing that she wears.
I give a damn.
I shouldn't give a damn.
I shield my eyes now from her glare.

This second of the third degree
The price I pay for what I need
It's time to go
But I just couldn't go
There's something weighing down on me.

Repetitive Motion

Some people (even bright ones…although I'm not mentioning any names here…) make the same mistake over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.
And some people are dumb enough to watch.

Well, you know…
But you go there anyhow.
You saw it coming,
And it came.

But it's habitual,
It's a goddamn ritual.
It's your rite of passage
Your rite of spring.

Running on a wheel,
I know how you feel.
Made my choice, and followed you there.

Repetitive motion (X3)

In my greed,
For all the things I'd never need
I got just what I asked for,
And now it follows me around.

It's a losing game,
But it's really all the same.
If it's anything or everything
It means nothing in the end.

We said our goodbyes,
About a thousand times.
Hello was so much easier to say.

Given The Time

Another case of NOT a love song. Rather the opposite, really. Saw the first line spray painted on a wall several years ago, wrote the rest last fall.

Never was much good at goodbye
So I wrote it on your wall.
Never understood the promises you made,
But I never understood you much at all.

Given the time. I'll think about you…
Given the time, I'll think about you…
Then again, I'll probably find something better to do.
But given the time, I'll think about you.

You don't believe in anything that you can't see.
Measured, practical, never free.
It don't make sense that you don't understand.
Completely missed the point where funny became sad.

Less Than Impressed (More Than You Know)

I'd had the first line for quite a while and it amused me, so I wrote some other stuff to go with it. Not aimed at anyone in particular.
Honest…

He came, he saw, he fucked up…
And he left.
It's a strange way to capture hearts and minds
But it's such a pretty mess.

The train's rolling out of the station,
I'd like to be, but I can't say I'm aboard.
I'll remain in your veins
Crashed right here on the floor

Less than impressed, more than you know

Giving less than you ever believed,
You sideswipe life with crash and bang,
And easy to deceive.
Just a fashion made for the passing,
Another young idea, growing old.
The price on the ice, it always left you cold.

Public, private, empathy…
Drowning in your kind.
Dizzy, busy, everything,
That's spinning in your mind.
